Ictíneo HISTORY

 

In 1858, once gained the first funds, presented his project in a pamphlet entitled The Ictíneo or Ictineo Submarineboat-pez.10 His first submarine, the Ictíneo I, was launched at the Port of Barcelona on June 28, 1859, after a series of dives in private, made ​​its debut on 23 September. To shareholders, press and general public was able to sail the boat completely submerged for 2 hours and 20 minutes at a depth of 20 m, and bring him back to the surface.


The official tests be carried out in the port of Alicante on March 7, 1861, attended by Navy officials, the government of Isabel II appointed several study groups in order to provide assistance to the project that never came, despite the popular enthusiasm and support of the Economic Societies of Friends of the country.11 12 As a result, Monturiol wrote a letter to the public, encouraging a national subscription, that won 300,000 pesetas of Spanish citizens. With the capital raised, the company was set up Submarine Navigation with the project of developing II.13 Ictíneo.


The Ictíneo II attracted some interest from high military bodies. This new submarine, which was equipped with an anaerobic propulsion system, was launched at the port of Barcelona on October 2, 1864. Despite these successes, in 1867 his company went bankrupt and, given the lack of support, Monturiol decided to dismantle the submarine and leave the project. There remain, however, the writings published during development, 14 15 and his posthumous essay on the art of navigating underwater.
